How To Make Soap And Bath Additives

Did you know that you can try to make your own soap using ingredients that are usually lying around your house? Here’s how!

HOW TO MAKE SOAP

You can pamper your skin with your own fragrance preferences, using homemade soap and bath additives.

For a large block of homemade soap, you’ll need:

  • 400g pure vegetable margarine
  • 250g coconut oil
  • 200ml olive oil
  • 300ml distilled water
  • 137g sodium hydroxide (from the pharmacy)
  • 4 tbsp. soft rolled oats

HOW TO MAKE SOAP

HOMEMADE SOAP METHOD

  1. Carefully add the sodium hydroxide to the water – preferably while wearing an apron and safety goggles. The salt solution will heat up very quickly, so be careful! Put the liquid to one side and let it cool for around an hour.
  2. Melt the vegetable margarine and coconut oil in a pan over a low heat. Carefully add the olive oil to this, and then remove the pan from the hob.
  3. Once the fat and the salt solution have cooled, mix them both together.
  4. Stir the mixture until it becomes noticeably thicker.
  5. Add the rolled oats, and if you want, add a drop or two of fragrance oil. Vanilla, rose, orange and lavender essences smell great.
  6. Pour the soap mixture into a silicone mould and leave it to harden for at least 24 hours.
  7. The next day, remove the soap from the mould and cut it into small pieces. It then needs to dry in the open for four to six weeks.

HOW TO MAKE A CREAM BATH

A cream bath makes dry skin wonderfully soft and smooth.

HOMEMADE CREAM BATH METHOD

  1. Mix 100ml cream and 2 tbsp. nut oil in a bowl
  2. Add 1 tsp. surfactant to ensure the cream and oil blend together well
  3. Pour the cream bath mixture into a warm bath along with a few drops of lavender or rose oil for a pleasant fragrance, and relax.

Always read the label. Follow the directions for use.
