How to look younger

Anti aging tips

Unfortunately we can’t halt the ageing process, but by keeping your skin healthy and cared for, you have a better chance of looking younger than your age.

Firstly, keep healthy internally with:

  • Regular exercise for healthy organs and increased blood flow
  • A diet rich in nutritious and healthy anti-aging foods
  • Hydrating by drinking plenty of water
  • Reducing caffeine and alcohol

Skin is a living organ, like any other in your body, so what goes into it is important.

Externally, there are also many ways you can help prevent the early signs of ageing. Reduce your sun exposure, wear sunscreen and use anti-aging cream to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When selecting an anti ageing cream, look for ingredients such as creatine, hyaluronic acid, magnolia bark extract and Q10 Coenzyme. Scientists have discovered our skin contains this acid when we are younger, but we need to replenish as we age because our ability to produce it naturally decreases over time.

The science behind anti-aging is important to us: it’s why we invest heavily in skin research. For example, in 1933 NIVEA became the first skincare company to register a face care product with UV filters and we have been innovating ever since. For more information about this and to learn how to slow down the ageing process, take a look at our expert advice and useful articles.

Anti-Ageing Skin Care

Ageing skin is a natural process. We can’t stop it happening but we can work against its effects by stimulating our cell activity with the correct anti aging skin care.

As we age, the skin’s own components such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and Q10 reduce in the body, so it’s important to use an effective anti-wrinkle cream. Each day, NIVEA scientists are involved in looking at how to prevent the skin from ageing and which products produce the best possible results in anti-ageing skin care.

What is the best anti ageing cream?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a one-word answer to that question! NIVEA however knows that everyone’s skin is different as we are all exposed to different levels of stress, sun and oxidants. So we have developed a range of different products to suit different skin types, rejuvenation needs and ages.

9 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles

With age, our skin loses elasticity as less collagen gets produced by the body. As this happens, wrinkles begin to form. However the good news is that there are steps we can take to reduce wrinkles, including adjusting our diets and skin care routine.

Caring for Mature Skin

As we age, our skin has more demands and needs extra care and attention to keep it radiant and healthy. By looking after your skin properly you can help reduce the signs of ageing, including wrinkles and sun damage.

Q10 Enzyme

Coenzyme Q10 (sometimes abbreviated to CoQ10 ) is a vitamin-like substance that occurs naturally in our body. Its primary function is to generate energy for cells, but it is also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells and organs from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are extra atoms or molecules that occur in the body as a result of energy production. They have a single, unpaired electron which Q10, being an antioxidant, picks up. It even keeps busy regenerating other antioxidants such as Vitamin E.

However, as we age, our bodies tend to generate even more free radicals and our Q10 stores also decrease. This means our skin is more prone to damage by free radicals, environmental factors and UVA light. Fine lines start to appear, skin loses its elasticity and existing wrinkles deepen. Q10 in skin care products stimulates cell production and encourages regeneration from free radical damage. Products containing Q10 are deeply hydrating, nourishing and moisturising.

Hyaluronic Acid in Skin Care

Hyaluronic Acid in Skin Care

Hyaluronic acid (also known as hyaluronan, hyaluronate or HA) occurs naturally, particularly in young skin, and also in joint fluid where it cushions and lubricates joints. In skin, it is known to increase cells’ ability to bind water, giving skin a plumper, firmer appearance. It also aids skin repair. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in moisture. So when used in cosmetics, your skin looks plumped up and wrinkles appear smoother. Skin will also feel extremely nourished, hydrated and moisturised.

Levels of hyaluronic acid deplete in our bodies as we age. Skin slowly loses water, has less firmness and structure. A bad diet, sunburn and smoking can also adversely affect the body's level of hyaluronic acid.

Magnolia Bark Extract

Magnolia Bark Extract

Magnolia bark extract is one of the most potent anti-wrinkle ingredients tested so far at Beiersdorf. Magnolia bark extract is obtained from the bark of the plant Magnolia officinalis. It contains high amounts of organic compounds Magnolol and Honokiol which, has been said, are up to 1000 times more potent than Vitamin E in antioxidants. It has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory herbal remedy in traditional Chinese medicine.

In skincare, magnolia bark extract helps repair fine lines and the start of wrinkles. It also helps prevent new ones from forming through increasing skin cells’ resistance to oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby decelerating the ageing process. Magnolia bark also helps fade dark spots and pigmentation.

Creatine benefits

Creatine is a nitrogenous organic acid, consisting of 3 amino acids L-arginine, glycine, and L-methionine. It is produced in the liver and helps to supply energy to cells all over the body. It’s particularly used by athletes to boost their performance speed and endurance, as well as enhancing recovery after injury. It is known to reduce muscle cell damage and inflammation following exhaustive exercise.

In the same way, creatine in moisturisers helps to repair skin cells and gives skin more power to regenerate. Production of collagen in the skin is quite complex, but without sufficient cellular energy to synthesise, collagen stores will deplete, resulting in a decline in skin elasticity and the formation of wrinkles. Creatine provides new energy to cells, stimulates collagen production, and reduces the signs of ageing.
